Emotional Checkin
Situation
I was tasked with taking over this project from another designer, and continuing where they left off. The request was to explore ways to capture user feedback about their experience with the app as well as their attitude or temperament related to their current financial situation. The challenge in this was figuring out how to glean the right kind of feedback from users in a way that was non-intrusive and simple to execute for the user.
Above, I conducted explorations on the way that emotions were represented visually as well as exploring the taxonomy that would be associated with them. This was essential because we were exploring two different approaches. 1. Non linear approach: initially the we were representing an imitational gradient that represented a series on non sequential emotional states. The problem with this approach was that we would not be able to track the emotions on the back or rate the emotions on the back-end. For example, it’s difficult to assign a value to the emotion “confident” relative to the emotion “grateful”. 2. Linear approach: This approach had the apparent benefit of being trackable and ratable in relation to each-other. This emotional gradient builds from worst to best in terms of emotional state. Because of this we would be able more accurately track the progression or regression of the user’s emotional state.
Above you can see how information related to the user’s emotional state could be captured, as well as rationale for that reported emotional state. Additionally, we added an input field where the user could report any additional impressions that would be logged for their own record keeping. Add the end of the flow, the user would be provided with contextual content that would ideally help improve or add to their current emotional disposition.
Above, you can see an example of a UI exploration on the “linear approach”.
Above you can see an example of the “non linear” approach.
Result
To my knowledge this experience is still in development. After the designer who took over this work from returned from leave I handed off all of the work I had done and documentation over to them. This was great learning experience for me, as I got to work through a complex experience from end-to-end. Exercising visual design skills, interaction design, creating components inside of an existing design system, collaborating with human behavior experts and other cross-functional parters in the process.
